Parashat Mishpatim – Worship From Afar

AUDIO FILE

There is a longing in my heart for the intimacy with Adonai that Moses had and that the Disciples had. But the biggest question I ask myself is, “Am I willing, really willing to count the cost of that sort of intimacy?” Moses cries out to Adonai, “Please, show me your glory!” [1] (33:18) Moses’ cry for more of Adonai reminds me of Philip’s cry in John 14:8, “Master, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” In all of this there is a longing for more of Him; a heart that is not satisfied.

[Read Exodus 24]

  • Vs 1-2: The call is to come up, but only to “worship from afar.”
  • Vs 3-8: All the people entered into this covenant, and freely accepted Adonai’s terms and conditions. The people counted the cost.
  • Vs 9-11: All the elders saw the L-RD from a distance, whereas Moses (and Joshua) were called closer.
  • Vs 12: Moses was called into the presence of Adonai.

[Read John 14]

  • Vs 1-4: Yeshua reminds us not to worry, but that He is trustworthy.
  • Vs 6-7: No one comes to the Father except through Yeshua. When we see for truth, we have to remember that we are actually seeking after a person.
  • Vs 9-11: If we have seen Yeshua, then we have seen the Father. We have someone to fall in love with.
  • Vs 12-14: When we put our trust in Yeshua, we will do the works that He did and more.
  • Vs 15: Our love toward Yeshua is demonstrated by our obedience.
  • Vs 16-19: But we have a Helper! The Spirit of truth who is with or rather in us.
  • Vs 21: Obedience is love and leads to a greater revelation of who Yeshua is.
  • Vs 23-25: Obedience to Yeshua’s word leads to a deeper relationship.
  • Vs 26: But we have a Helper! The Ruach HaKodesh will teach us and remind us of Yeshua’s words.

Yeshua said in Matt. 5:8 that the pure in heart will see God. When we cry out for more of his presence or for a deeper relationship with him, what we are really asking is for Him to purify our hearts. What then should we do? [James 4:1-12]
